Oil Paintings...

so... i just wanted to get a critique from everyone. i'm starting to work with oil paints and loving it! they mix great, they smear great and are just all around fun to work with. anyhow, i am just wondering what you think of these paintings. they are more "modern"/abstract art, which i was never really a fan of before but i'm really starting to like more and more (but still am very choosy on what i like). so what do you think? should i keep doing these or drop them? they might just look like kids paintings and i would never know unless i'm told that. it's that whole bias thing since i'm the one who painted them. i really appreciate your comments! :) i've mainly used variations of black and white but will get more colors going if i decide that it's worth it to keep going. and i'll probably use these as backgrounds and paint silhouettes on them. like a few small bird silhouettes flying or such...

and just a side comment, i didn't improve the colors in photoshop to make them as they naturally are, so the colors are what you get from bad indoor light. they really are much more vibrant than the pictures suggest.

don't forget to leave your comments and let me know what you think! THANK YOU! :)

Hi Becca,
Ok.. here's my opinion. The first one looks like fall leaves which is ok, but if that's what you're going for, maybe more colors and less black. The second one looks like a fish swimming through an oil spill. The next two are not really exciting just black and white... needing a focal point. The last one.. AWESOME! Love it.. Keep going, girl! Then I can tell everyone that my niece is a world famous artist!

I really love the last one. The others might grow on me. Keep up the good work.

Hey, Becca!
It's Krystal down in Cedar. Just found your blog through Jennifer's and thought I'd leave my two cents: I really like them all! I've also never really understood the whole modern/abstract art thing, but looking at these, I think it looks like a lot of fun!! I love art, but no longer really consider myself an artist...since about the 5th grade. :( At first your paintings seemed to have like an oriental feel to me, but the third to last one seemed more Native American with the whispy feather-like strokes and colors...apparently I look at art in terms of culture. :) Anyway, CAN'T WAIT to see you next week!!! Sorry my comment's so long--I don't do this very often.

Hey Becca and Shawn.... I Found your blog and thought I would drop in and say HI!!!
I went to elementary, middle, and high school with Shawn and were great friends! It is kinda sad that we haven't seen each other for forever!
I hope all is well with you two. I think the whole mother's day cake and flowers was waaaay cute. We are also Dairy Queen cake lovers.
Keep in touch!

Here's my very I'm-not-an-artist (let alone a connoisseur) perspective. First thought? I really don't get modern art. Second thought (second look through, and after reading the comments)? The middle one is my favorite, and I can actually imagine having it on my wall. I like how it's feathery and complicated looking (rather than just a few smears). I think the ones with red in them, particularly the last one, look kind of like a splash of blood... I like your idea to paint silhouettes on them; I think that would look awesome!

Very nice, they remind me of bird feathers.

I know I am not an artist but I am having a hard time telling the difference between them. I do agree that including colors would be neat, but do like the idea of the red mixed in all the black.
One of these days I will pick up a sketching class, I really want to learn. First I am looking into a pottery class though...sure miss that.

OK, Bec,
Here is my comment. The pictures are evocative of feathers. I like the 3rd one. The all black doesn't bother me. I think I like it because it looks the most like something recognizable....feathers. I also like the second one because of the splash of red. By the way, Emilyn Penfield saw your moose drawing the other day and she was very impressed.
